Some of you may already know, but I am currently in the middle of a nutrition consultant course through the Nutritional Therapy Association. If you haven’t heard of them before, you should know that they are real-food advocates who follow the teaching of Dr. Weston A. Price. So far, the course has been an amazing experience! With all the reading and writing I have been doing, I have definitely been slacking on getting my blog posts up. But I thought, if I find this all fascinating, then maybe, just maybe, you will too! So here it is. One of my first assignments was to write a book review for one of the major resources that will be used throughout the course. And, well, I can certainly see why…! This book is a must have as a reference. Very detailed and full of scientific references. Seriously, if you’ve been wanting to know more about this “real food movement” or just healthy eating in general, then I highly recommend you give this one a try!

Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats by Sally Fallon
What is the “Big Idea” of this book?
The big idea of Nourishing Traditions is to answer the three basic questions concerning various elements of a whole food diet: the What? Why? and How? What are these carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes and what forms of these nutrients are best for our bodies? Why are these nutrients so important for longevity and why processed versions of these nutrients do not chemically work the same in our bodies as the whole food version along with the multiple research and studies that support this fact? And lastly, this book explains how to incorporate more of these whole foods into one’s diet (aka healthy eating) by giving a number of recipes and nutritious food ideas to make transitioning to a healthy, real food lifestyle easier for everyone.
List three things I learned about nutrition from this book.
I learned many things from this book, but especially appreciate the fact that it shared many studies and evidence-based research throughout the introduction chapters of which many were new to me. I also learned that all herbs and spices should be labeled “nonirradiated”. I had honestly never looked or noticed those words on a label before! The third, of many, thing I learned just kind of made me laugh. The book mentions that all outbreaks of salmonella in the past few decades have occurred in pasteurized milk. Just goes to show that the government putting down rules against the purchasing and selling of certain foods (such as raw milk) does not necessary mean that their “healthier” versions are any better for people. And that maybe they shouldn’t be in charge of the well-being of all individuals.
Was there anything contradictory to the philosophy of this class?
I did not find much in the way of things that were contradictory to the philosophy of the Nutritional Therapy Association. Seeing as this is one of the primary resources for the course, it makes sense for it to all align.
My thoughts/comments/perspectives about this book.
I absolutely love how this book lists so many studies for many of the myths of the standard American diet (SAD) and the “philosophy” behind the FDA and AHA and other industrial giants that have too much control. The book was easy to read and kept my attention throughout my reading. It listed many examples and described each nutrient and their roles in the body in easy to digest terminology which is great for someone like me who has a hard time paying attention when there are so many large words. (True story.) The author also breaks down big terms to make everything more approachable which will make it easier for me to pass the information on to my present and future clients. I am very much looking forward to trying out some of the recipes within this book and sharing with my loved ones suffering with various diseases, some evidence-based research and studies along with simple diet and lifestyle changes they can all do to reverse their disease as sometimes merely the word of a loved one is not enough to make someone want to change.”
There you have it! My review of this amazing, must-have book for healthy eating. No joke.
